Apple's Laptop Market Share Climbs

Its notebook sales, now 17.6 percent of the market, pushed Apple to number three in the list of PC makers.
Jim Dalrymple, Macworld
While Apple may be focusing a lot of its attention on the iPhone lately, consumers are clearly still interested in the company's computer offerings. Data from one market research firm shows Apple's notebook business broke 17 percent while another research firm said Apple has moved into third place among computer makers.

According to NPD, Apple's retail notebook market share for June 2007 was 17.6 percent, a 2.2 percent increase over the same period last year when Apple posted a 15.4 percent market share.

As good as the notebooks are doing, Apple's overall standing among computer makers is up too.

According to data from research firm IDC, Apple's continued rise in computer sales puts it in third place overall among all computer makers. This is the first time since 1996 that Apple finds itself this high on the list of top selling manufacturers.

Dell took the top spot with HP coming in second place of total unit sales. With Apple taking the number three spot, Gateway and Acer round out the top five.

The good news continues for Apple - with increased notebook sales pushing it forward, the company now has an overall market share of 5.9 percent, up 1.1 percent from the 4.8 percent it posted this time last year.

In its most recent financial quarter Apple sold 1.76 million Macs, a 33-percent rise over what it shipped in the third quarter of 2006 and 2.5 times the industry-wide growth rate published by market-research firm IDC.

Mac sales for the quarter marked a record for the company, topping the previous quarterly high of 1.61 million Macs shipped during the fourth quarter of 2006.

While there was a rise in desktop sales for the quarter - 634,000 units compared to 529,000 for the same period in 2006 - laptop unit sales skyrocketed 42 percent to 1.13 million portables. All told, 64 percent of the Macs sold during the quarter were laptops

Adobe's Moviestar Brings HD Support to Flash

Adobe Systems announced a beta version of its web-pervasive Flash Player, code-named 'Moviestar,' that can display HD video content using the open-source H.264 standard. The H.264 codec is part of the MPEG-4 video standard, and it's implemented in both the Blu-ray and HD DVD high-def formats. The company also announced support for High Efficiency AAC audio and hardware-accelerated, multicore video playback. The beta will be available today at labs.adobe.com.

Adobe sees this enhancement to Flash as complementing its Premiere and After Effects content creation tools, as well as its upcoming AIR (Adobe Integrated Runtime) platform for deploying rich web applications. Another piece of the puzzle will be Adobe Media Player, which is sort of a desktop installed-software version of the browser-based Flash Player. The media player will give content creators their beloved DRM and the ability to display ads along with the video, along with TiVo-like functions for the viewer.

Adobe engineer Tinic Uro's blog wanders deep into the technical details of the update, which includes several more technology implementations than just the H.264 support, like ISO 14496-12 (read the blog if you really want to know).

Microsoft's Super Bundle of Security Patches

Security experts call it one of the most significant group of security fixes this year.
Robert McMillan, IDG News Service

Microsoft Corp. has released what security experts are calling one of it most significant security fixes this year.

On Tuesday morning, the software maker pushed out nine sets of patches, called updates in Microsoft parlance, fixing a total of 14 bugs in its software. Six of these updates are rated critical by Microsoft, meaning that attackers could exploit the flaws with no user action required. The other three updates are rated important.

It is the largest set of updates released by Microsoft since February.

"People should definitely cancel their dinner plans and make sure they take this one seriously because both the breadth and impact of these are important," said Don Leatham, director of solutions and strategy with PatchLink Corp. "This is an intense month."

Leatham is particularly concerned with the MS07-046 update, which fixes a critical flaw in the graphics rendering system used by Windows. The flaw lies in the Windows graphics device interface (GDI) software used to send graphics data to printers and monitors.

Microsoft says that attackers could exploit this flaw by tricking a victim into opening a specially crafted e-mail attachment, but because the bug lies in a core component of Windows, Leatham believes that there may be other ways to exploit the flaw. "I think this will be a target of the hacking community," he said. "if it's clear down in the graphics rendering engine, I'm assuming that there may be other ways to exploit this, because the graphics rendering engine is used by many applications."

The flaw affects all supported versions of Windows, except Windows Vista and Windows Server 2003 Service pack 2.

Three other patches, fixing critical flaws in Excel and Internet Explorer should also be given priority, said Amol Sarwate, manager of Qualys Inc.'s vulnerability research lab. Those updates are MS07-044, MS07-045 and MS07-050.

These desktop applications are generally "the weakest link" in corporate security and are increasingly being targeted by attackers, Sarwate said.

All of the vulnerabilities patched Tuesday affect some components of the desktop, Sarwate noted. None of the bugs patched Tuesday had been publicly disclosed, he said.

Other critical updates relate to the XML Core Services used by Internet Explorer to process XML (Extensible Markup Language) pages and the Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) technology used by some Windows applications.

The less-critical updates fix bugs in the Windows Media Player, Microsoft Virtual PC and Virtual Server, and in Windows Gadgets.

With 50 security updates now released, Microsoft has kept pace with last year's patch output. By August of 2006, Microsoft has issued 51 updates.

Microsoft Previews SP1 for Exchange Server 2007

Microsoft's update to Exchange Server 2007 moves the e-mail server closer to other unified communications products.
Jeremy Kirk, IDG News Service

Microsoft Corp. is offering a preview of the first service pack for Exchange Server 2007, an update that binds the company's latest e-mail server closer to other so-called unified communications products.

Those who belong to Microsoft's Developer Network or subscribe to the company's TechNet service can download a beta version of Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1 as of Tuesday. The final version is scheduled for release in the last quarter this year.

Exchange 2007, released in November 2006 along with Outlook 2007, is the first major update to the mail server since Exchange 2003. It's the first version of the software that runs only on 64-bit servers and marks a major technology upgrade.

With the service pack, Microsoft has fixed an annoyance for administrators: the management tools for Exchange 2007 will now work with Windows Server 2008, the company's forthcoming server operating system upgrade, as well as with Windows Vista. The tools enable an Exchange 2007 server to be managed remotely from a desktop machine.

Also new is a feature called "standby continuous replication," where e-mail data is continuously copied to a server on standby and activated if the primary server or data center fails.

"This is in contrast to Exchange 2003, for which database problems could necessitate restoration from tape backup, causing lengthy downtime was well as the potential loss of users' most recent messages and other data," wrote Peter Pawlak, an analyst with Directions on Microsoft, in a research report earlier this year.

Other improvements are focused on tighter links to Microsoft's other communications products. The company has also strengthened links to Office Communications Server 2007 and Office Communicator 2007, an application for mobile devices that supports features such as instant messaging and VOIP (voice over Internet protocol).

Voice mail messages can be retrieved now in Office Communicator 2007 with one click, Microsoft said. The service pack also enables users to receive faxes and check their voice mail through Outlook 2007.

The company has also modified one of its security products to work with the new service pack. Forefront Security for Exchange Server SP1 should be available sometime in the last quarter of this year.

Windows XP: The OS That Won't Die?

The six-year-old operating system's continued popularity has nearly exhausted the supply of product activation keys.
Gregg Keizer, Computerworld

Microsoft Corp. has had to create a new build of Windows XP Professional for computer makers because the six-year-old operating system's continued popularity has nearly exhausted the supply of product activation keys.

The new build, dubbed SP2c, includes no fixes or feature changes, but was created simply to address the shrinking pool of product keys. XP Pro SP2c, which has been released to manufacturing, will be made available to OEMs and system builders next month, said Microsoft.
"Due to the longevity of Windows XP Professional, it has become necessary to produce more product keys for system builders in order to support the continued availability of Windows XP Professional through the scheduled system builder channel end-of-life (EOL) date," wrote the Microsoft system builder team on its blog Thursday.

Previously, Microsoft has set Windows XP's EOL for retailers and OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) as Jan. 31, 2008, and for small-scale systems builders a year after that.

"SP2c will be released into the System Builder channel in September to provide system builders with a new, extended range of product keys," the system builder team said. The updated build applies only to Windows XP Professional; XP Home, for instance, is not affected.

The move shouldn't come as a surprise; Even Microsoft has predicted continuing strong sales of Windows XP. Last month, the company's chief financial officer said that he tweaked the fiscal year 2008 forecast to account for XP's longevity. Rather than count on an 85/15 split in sales between Vista and XP, said Chris Liddell, Microsoft now expects a 78/22 split, an increase of nearly 50 percent in anticipated XP sales.

Other signs of the not-dead-yet OS's vigor have included retreats by OEMs like Dell Inc. from earlier Vista-only policies. In April, for example, Dell again began offering Windows XP as an option to consumers. It had already done the same thing for small business customers.

Coming to Your Laptop: 1.2TB Hard Drives

Fujitsu is expected to announce a breakthrough this week that could lead the company to produce hard drives with storage capacities of up to 1.2TB.
Brian Fonseca, Computerworld

As hard drive manufacturers relentlessly pursue packing greater aerial density on smaller devices, Fujitsu Computer Products of America Inc. may have an ace in the hole. The company is announcing later this week that it has created ideally "ordered" alumina nanohole patterns for isolated bit-by-bit recording on a large disk area.

With that feat, Fujitsu says it has successfully demonstrated the ability to perform basic read/write capability of each individual nanohole of the patterned media using a typical flying head on a rotating disk. That breakthrough could lead the company to produce hard drives with storage capacities of up to 1.2TB on a two-platter, 2.5-in. drive as soon as 2010, noted Joel Hagberg, vice president of business development at Fujitsu Computer Products of America, a wholly owned subsidiary of Tokyo-based Fujitsu Ltd.

The construction of ideally ordered alumina nanohole patterned media was done through a collaboration between Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Yamagata Fujitsu Ltd. and Kanagawa Academy of Science and Technology. The achievement is published in the July online version of Applied Physics Letters.

The patterned alumina nanohole media was created via a Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR) processes using nano-imprint lithography (enabling discrete distance from bit to bit or track to track), anodic oxidation and cobalt electrodeposition at a density of 100-nanometer-pitch nanoholes suitable to existing head technology.

Ideal pattern technology is a big step toward ensuring that drives won't face challenges recording at higher aerial densities by moving to tighter track densities and closer spacing among bits, Hagberg noted. However, to pull that off, he said, a number of factors still need to be examined. They include the presence of pattern thermal assist recording technology to warm media before it is written to, determining what magnetic flux is required from the head and determining how will the information be read.

Because smaller hard drives offer less power consumption and cooling efforts than their larger counterparts, hard disk drive end users and businesses want the best of both worlds -- minimized drives capable of reaching higher capacity points, said John Rydning, an analyst at Framingham, Mass.-based IDC.

"[Fujitsu's achievement] allows especially the smaller form factors to reach pretty high capacities. From a business-requirement standpoint, one advantage that brings is the opportunity to use smaller drives for applications, and smaller drives tend to use less power," remarked Rydning. "That kind of technology is definitely what's needed to get [improved storage] requirements."

Leaked Vista Hotfix Packs Now Official

You may now download two Windows Vista updates that had leaked to the Internet at the end of July. No word on when they reach Windows Update.
Gregg Keizer, Computerworld

Microsoft Corp. Tuesday released the two Windows Vista updates that had leaked to the Internet at the end of July, but won't say when it will begin pushing them to users via Windows Update.

Pegged as performance and reliability packs, the pair install a long list of non-security bug fixes, among them speed improvements to wake-from-hibernation, a patch that eliminates the long wait to calculate the time it will take to copy or move large directories, and several that target compatibility glitches with video drivers.

Microsoft even described one of the quashed bugs with the vague but ominous-sounding: "The computer stops responding or restarts unexpectedly when you play video games or perform desktop operations."

All of the fixes, said the company, are new to Vista, and do not replace any existing updates. Users must restart their computer after each update is installed.

The performance update, designated KB938979, weighs in at nearly 10MB, and can be downloaded from the Microsoft Download Center. The accompanying support document is also available.

Vista's reliability update, KB938194, is petite by comparison -- just 2.1MB. It's also now available for downloading, and has a KnowledgeBase document that spells out changes.

Previews of the now-official updates had leaked to the Web at the end of July, fueling speculation that they were connected to the highly-anticipated Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1), and might even be harbingers of SP1's release. A day later, July 31, a Microsoft spokeswoman confirmed that the hotfix packs would end up in user's hands "in the near future," but declined to answer questions about any link to SP1.

The company did recently confirm, however, that it has released preview code for Vista SP1 -- as well as the same for the long-delayed Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) -- to small invite-only groups of testers. But it would not say when the updates to each operating system will release in final versions.

Vista SP1, which Microsoft has so far committed only to provide in beta "sometime this year," has consistently been downplayed by the company, to the point of stifling talk of the security rollup. Many corporations, on the other hand, appear to be waiting for SP1 before deploying the new OS.

Windows XP SP3 has an even longer, and more troubled, history. Last October, Microsoft announced a delay of SP3, and pushed the release into the first half of 2008, more than a year after the retail release of Vista and about three-and-a-half years after SP2 appeared. Hints of XP SP3's progress were tucked into a status report filed with the federal judge overseeing the 2002 antitrust settlement struck between U.S. regulators and Microsoft, but details were slim. The report confirmed the existence of SP3 and said some code would be finalized in the summer of 2007, but did not specify either beta or final release dates.

Tuesday, in fact, a Microsoft spokesperson called the first-half 2008 date for SP3 "preliminary" and declined to disclose more details.

Microsoft did not respond today to queries about when the Vista performance and reliability updates would migrate to the company's automatic patching services, including Windows Update. Some bloggers and users have been betting that the hotfix packs will be offered up next Tuesday, the already-scheduled monthly patch day for Microsoft. But others have discounted that date, saying Microsoft would not overtax users or the automatic update systems with such large downloads.

Elizabeth Montalbano of the IDG News Service contributed to this report.

The three iMac models will be priced at $1,199, $1,499, and $1,799, and each will be characterized by the size of its monitor: two 20-inch displays for the two lower-priced models, and a whopping 24-inch flat-screen display for the premium version.

Apple also updated its iLife suite to iLife '08, adding a new Events app and updating its iPhoto application.

The iMac updates were expected; word of the launch had leaked onto the Web, as well as into PC Magazine's own Inside Apple column. Features will include up to a 2.4-GHz Core 2 Duo, up to 4GB of RAM, an ATI Radeon HD graphics card and a 1TB hard drive, with 802.11n wireless built in.

One of the keys for Apple, according to chief executive Steve Jobs, was the emphasis on aluminum and glass, both materials that are associated with professionalism and, in the case of glass, easily recycled. A new keyboard was also introduced, as expected: the keyboard contains dedicated Expose and Dashboard hotkeys, as well as multimedia keys, both emulating as well as distancing itself from the Windows world and its dedicated launch key. The keyboard will come in either wired or Bluetooth 2.0 wireless forms, Jobs said.

The new iPhoto update automatically creates "events," which can be associated with a slideshow and split or merged over a period of time. Pictures can now be rated with an iTunes-like "star" rating, and hidden if a photo needs to be saved, but not viewed. The editing tools have been enhanced, and users can now print to specific themes, as well as updated book themes and calendars.

VMWare Fusion for Mac OS X to Release on Monday, August 6th

VMware has announced the public availability of its VMware Fusion software will finally happen on Monday 6th August 2007. With the new software all Mac users will be able to simultaneously run Mac OS X, Windows and other PC-based applications on Intel-based Macs. The other option is restarting to run Windows and Windows applications, as Apple’s Boot Camp software mandates.

VMware boasts that its VMware Fusion enables Mac users to run both 32- and 64-bit operating systems, using two processor cores concurrently, and a number of USB 2.0 devices. Further more, VMware maintained that Fusion also has the distinction of being the only Mac virtualization software available in the present day that has the ability to offer support for more than 60 operating systems and power management capabilities to safeguard virtual machines when laptops are running out of battery.

VMware Fusion beta was released in December 2006 and since then there have already been 250,000 downloads of the software.

VMware product manager Dan Chu said, “VMware Fusion was designed for Mac enthusiasts looking for a seamless way to run Windows applications on the Mac.” Adding, “VMware Fusion combines a very clean and intuitive interface that Mac users expect with the world’s most trusted desktop virtualization platform to allow users to run Mac applications seamlessly alongside PC applications on Intel-based Macs.”

However, VMware is sure to face a cut throat competition from the Parallels Desktop 3.0 for Mac product, in the Windows-on-Mac virtualization market. Parallels launched its third-generation product in June and a few days later there was news about the VMware Fusion Software bringing Windows apps to Mac.

For those who are currently working with Parallels, VMWare provides a Converter utility to allow users to convert their Parallels virtual machine to a VMWare version instead. Fusion also works with Boot Camp.

Parallels director Benjamin Rudolph maintained, “We’re confident that we will maintain our leadership role by continuing to respond to the needs of our customers by introducing new groundbreaking technologies - as we did with Coherence and SmartSelect - that make working with multiple operating systems easier, faster, and more productive than ever before.”

According to Lee, users who are using Parallels with a Boot Camp partition are encouraged to uninstall Parallels prior to installing Fusion.

Furthermore, Fusion bundles “experimental” support for Mac OS X v10.5 “Leopard,” and also features “experimental” 3D graphics support making it possible for users to try Windows games (similarly to Parallels, it’s limited at this time to DirectX 8.1 support — an older version of Microsoft’s 3D API).

VMware Fusion is now available online, and will be available through Apple’s retail stores and other authorized retailers worldwide. And the VMware Fusion site states: For a limited time, VMware Fusion is available for pre-order for only $39.99, a 50% savings over the suggested retail price of $79.99 when VMware Fusion is released for general availability.” So you have a chance to pre-order it now through Sunday, August 5, 12:00 PM (Pacific Time).

HP Dismisses Laser Printer Health Risks

Printer manufacturer claims that emissions from its laser printers do not pose a danger.
Gregg Keizer, Computerworld

Hewlett-Packard Co. Friday disputed research published earlier this week that said some of its laser printers may be a health risk to office and home computer users. While it did not directly contest the data gathered by Australian researchers, the U.S.-based printer and computer manufacturer flatly rejected the idea that emissions pose a danger.
"We do not believe there is a link between printer emissions and any public health risk," the company said in a statement.

On Wednesday, researchers at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia, published a paper detailing emission measurements of 58 laser printers inside a typical office. Emissions, believed to be related to the ultrafine powdered toner used in the printers, were tracked and the printers ranked as non-, low-, medium- or high-emitters. HP's models dominated the last category, accounting for 90 percent of the printers classified as emitting high levels of particulates.

"HP does not see an association between printer use by customers and negative health effects for volatile organic compounds, ozone or dust," the company continued in its statement. "While we recognize ultrafine, fine, and coarse particles are emitted from printing systems, these levels are consistently below recognized occupational exposure limits."

Researchers at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, a U.S. Department of Energy lab in Berkeley, Calif., agreed that it's too early to draw a line between printer emissions and health dangers.

"What we don't know is what the findings in the study mean," said Rich Sextro, an environment scientist at Berkeley Lab, in a posting on the laboratory's Web site. "Certainly our expectation is that exposures to lots of ultrafine particles probably isn't a very good thing, but we have no idea at the moment what that translates into in the real world."

The Australian study is among the first to document emissions from laser printers, but the specifics of how printers produce particles and what those particles are made of is mostly unknown -- something HP emphasized. "Testing of ultrafine particles is a very new scientific discipline," the company said. "Currently, the nature and chemical composition of such particles, whether from a laser printer or from a toaster, cannot be accurately characterized."

One thing that everyone agreed on -- even the Australian researchers -- is that more study should be done. Until a definitive link between laser printers, particulates and health risks are made, "fine particles alone are not enough to worry about," said Tom McKone, another Berkeley Lab scientist.

Mozilla Giving Away Security Testing Tools

Mozilla is releasing some of its own security tools to the open-source community.
Gregg Keizer, Computerworld

Mozilla Corp. will release some of its homegrown security tools to the open-source community, the company's head of security said Wednesday, starting with a "fuzzer" it uses to pin down JavaScript bugs in Firefox.

The JavaScript fuzzer, said Window Snyder, Mozilla's security chief since last September, will be handed over Thursday morning, following a presentation at Black Hat, a two-day security conference that opened Wednesday in Las Vegas.

"We're announcing that we'll be sharing our tools with the community, and releasing the JavaScript fuzzer then," said Snyder. Other tools will follow, including fuzzers that stress-test the HTTP and FTP protocols. Those two tools, however, are not ready to offer to outsiders, largely because Mozilla wants to wrap up talks with other browser vendors before they are shared.

Fuzzing, a technique used by both white- and black-hat researchers trolling for vulnerabilities, and by developers to finger flaws in their code before it goes public, drops data into applications or operating system components to see if -- and where -- breakdowns occur. Typically, the process is automated with a fuzzer, the term for software that hammers on application inputs. The JavaScript fuzzer, Snyder said, has identified "dozens" of vulnerabilities in Firefox code.

Snyder said Firefox developers have created many tools, and though a lot of them are small, special-purpose ones, all of them could be useful to others.

"We want to make the work we're already doing available to other people and to other products" in the hope that the tools might help developers outside Mozilla spot problems in their code, she said. Snyder sees a direct benefit to Mozilla, too. The more people who bang on the tool, tweak it and modify it, the better the tools should become, she said.

She seemed unconcerned that any tool Mozilla released would prove a significant danger to users. Although hackers also use fuzzers in their vulnerability-sniffing tool kits, "the tool isn't bad or good on its own," Snyder argued. "They use debuggers all the time. Debuggers aren't bad" because of that.

Mozilla might have wished it had fuzzed Firefox a bit more over the past three weeks, when it was caught in a name-calling contest between it and Microsoft Corp. supporters. Early last month, Danish researcher Thor Larholm found what he said was a critical input-validation bug in Internet Explorer that let the browser pass potentially malicious URLs to other programs, including Firefox. He laid blame on IE, while other security experts said it was Firefox's fault.

Shortly after that, Snyder hinted that she saw the whole mess as an IE problem, but within days acknowledged that Firefox was guilty of the same behavior. "We thought this was just a problem with IE," she said July 23. "It turns out, it is a problem with Firefox as well."

Wednesday, she said that the very public disagreements between security experts as to which browser was to blame had actually been a good thing. "Debate is healthy," she said. "And if we're wrong, we say we're wrong and move on."

Mozilla updated Firefox twice in July, first on July 17 with 2.0.0.5, and then Monday when it released Version 2.0.0.6. Both updates included fixes for the URL protocol handling bug that started the brouhaha. "We weren't twiddling our thumbs during all of this," said Snyder. "We were also on the back end moving forward with fixes."

At Black Hat, Snyder and fellow Mozilla executive Mike Shaver, the company's technology strategist, also plan to discuss the new security features of Firefox 3, the major update that currently is in preview testing. Firefox 3 is expected to ship sometime this year.

Microsoft to Release Free Version of Works

Microsoft confirmed Wednesday that it will be rolling out a free, ad-supported version of Microsoft Works over the next few months.

ADVERTISEMENT The free version, Microsoft Works SE 9, won't be distributed by Microsoft. Instead, the company's OEM partners will be responsible for the pilot deployment, according to a statement released by the company.

Microsoft decided to run the pilot, which will run for about a year across an unspecified number of "developed" countries, "in response to customer and partner needs who definitely value having productivity [applications] installed on their new PCs," said Melissa Stern, a senior product manager for Microsoft, in an interview.

The Works 9 SE software, however, will only be deployed by a limited number of OEMs. Microsoft's Stern would not name them or their number. The Works 9 SE software, however, will likely provide an inexpensive means of enticing customers to use Microsoft's low-cost Works suite, which include a word processor, database, spreadsheet, calendar and task launcher.

Microsoft Works Suite 2005
Works 9 SE (the SE is a designation, not an abbreviation, Stern said) will complement Works 9, which will be available for retail "very soon" for $39.95. Both Works 9 and Works SE are essentially identical in features and function, with the only difference the addition of advertising in the SE product, Stern said.

That advertising will be provided by Microsoft, through its partners. Ads displayed will be in conventional formats, such as a 180 x 150-pixel format. They also will be located in natural locations, she said: in the task pane, for example, the top two-thirds of the pane are used for displaying relevant information, such as recently-opened documents. The bottom third of the pane will be used to display the ad.

Accordinng to Stern, the ads served will be "relevant" to the user's activities. "We're defining who the audience is and what they're doing, such as working in budgets," she said.

"We've put a lot of thought into the implementation of advertising in Works, a lot of careful research in designing the ads in a way that's not overly intrusive," Stern added.

As one of the first major offline applications to integrate advertising, Works will have to provide relevant ads to keep its advertisers happy. However, Stern flatly denied that the software would examine the user content, whether actively -- as the user types it in -- or via saved content.

"We're serving relevant ads about what we know about Works users," Stern said. "We're not looking at content at all."

Stern declined to name the advertisers.

Office Laser Printers as harmful to Lungs as Cigarette Smoking is

The ubiquitous laser printer used at your office or even in your home could in fact be a silent killer. A new study conducted by Australian scientists claims that certain laser printers pose as a health risk because of the tiny particles of toner-like material that are released into the air.

The Australian scientists from the Queensland University of Technology have also said that such office laser printers could damage the lungs in pretty much the same way that smoke particles from cigarettes do.

For the study, the researchers studied a range of printer models and found that around a third of them emit potentially dangerous levels of toner particles into the air. Such miniscule particles may cause health problems, ranging from respiratory irritation to more severe illnesses like cardiovascular problems or even cancer.

The report also stated that one of the printers released particles into an experimental chamber at a rate comparable to the particle emissions from cigarette smoking.

During the study, Lidia Morawska, Ph.D and her colleagues in Australia classified 17 out of 62 printers as “high particle emitters” because they released such elevated quantities of particles.

Along with this rather bad news, here is some seemingly good news. 37 out of the 62 printers released no particles that diminished air quality, while six of them released only low levels, and 2 medium levels.

Interestingly, the study included commonly used printers such as those from Canon, HP Color Laserjet, Ricoh and Toshiba. The study was conducted in an open office, so as to reproduce “a real life” environment.

According to Morawska, indoor particle levels in the office air increased five-fold during working hours due to excessive printer use.

The study also found that printers emitted more particles when operating with new toner cartridges, and when printing graphics and images that require greater quantities of toner.

However, the study has not offered any definitive proof, and has concluded that more research of printers on the health effects is needed.

“By all means, this is an important indoor source of pollution. There should be regulations,” Morawska concluded.

Vista Hotfix Packs Leak to Web

Windows Vista hotfixes leak to the Internet after being offered to Windows Server 2008 beta testers this weekend.
Gregg Keizer, Computerworld

Two substantial collections of Windows Vista hotfixes leaked to the Internet after being offered to Windows Server 2008 beta testers this weekend, leading some users to speculate that the pair are actually the foundation of the future Service Pack 1 (SP1) release for the OS.

Labeled "Vista Performance and Reliability Pack" and "Vista Compatibility and Reliability Pack," the two updates feature a long list of non-security-related bug fixes, including those that improve Vista's resumption after sleep or hibernation, boost the speed of copying or moving large directories, prevent some memory corruption problems, bolster the reliability of systems upgraded from XP to Vista and increase compatibility with video drivers.

"These issues have been reported by customers using the Error Reporting service, product support or other means," the two packs' release notes said. "Installing this update will improve the performance and responsiveness of some scenarios, and improves reliability of Windows Vista in a variety of scenarios."

Some Vista users commenting on several of the blogs and forums covering the hotfixes -- a message thread on nVNews appeared to have been the first -- theorized that the packs would be the core of SP1, the service pack Microsoft has been both reluctant to talk about and eager to downplay.

Some of the fixes called out in the release notes seem to point in that direction, since they describe issues and patches already posted to the Microsoft support site. The item pegged as "resolves an issue where a computer can lose its default Gateway address when resuming from sleep mode," for example, is likely the same as an April 24 Vista fix.

The AeroXperience site even posted results of early testing of the packs' performance. According to a write-up here, systems updated with the Vista Performance and Reliability Pack copied large-sized folders in less than half the time as unpatched machines.

As of Monday afternoon, the fix packs were still accessible on at least one non-Microsoft download site. The performance pack update weighed in at 10GB, while the compatibility pack was considerably smaller, at around 2GB.

Although it may seem odd that the fix packs were released to Windows Server 2008 testers, that operating system -- scheduled to launch early next year -- shares code, particularly in the kernel, with Vista.

Microsoft did not reply to a series of questions about the fix packs, whether they are part of an already ongoing test of Vista SP1, or whether they would be issued in an upcoming release from Microsoft Update. The company often uses the one-a-month security patch schedule to also roll out other hotfixes; the next date is Aug. 14, two weeks from tomorrow.

Dell's New Indian Plant Starts Operation

The new facility, with an initial production capacity of 400,000 desktops a year, will focus on addressing the booming Indian PC market.
John Ribeiro, IDG News Service

Dell Inc. has started production at its new manufacturing facility in Sriperumbudur, India, the company said Monday.

The new facility, with an initial production capacity of 400,000 desktops a year, will focus on addressing the booming Indian PC market. Dell plans to invest about US$30 million over five years in the plant.

Located near Chennai in southern India, it joins Dell's two other Asian manufacturing operations in Penang, Malaysia, and Xiamen, China.

Earlier this year, Dell began manufacturing at a new facility in Brazil, with another scheduled to open in Poland later this year.

India's PC market exceeded 5 million units last year, posting a 25 percent cent year-on-year growth in unit shipments, according to research firm IDC (India) Ltd. in Gurgaon.

Last week, Lenovo Group Ltd. announced plans to establish a manufacturing facility in Baddi in northern India. It will be the company's second facility in the country. The other plant in Pondicherry in the southern part of the country came to Lenovo after the company acquired IBM Corp.'s PC business in 2005.

The two facilities in India will help Lenovo better service both the northern and southern parts of India, a spokeswoman for Lenovo said.

The new facility in Himachal Pradesh, to be operational later this year, will make both notebook and desktop computers with a production capacity of 2 million units a year.

Hewlett-Packard Co. also runs two manufacturing facilities in India. The Bangalore facility in southern India has a capacity of 75,000 units a year, according to a spokeswoman. The one in Uttaranchal in the northern part of the country, which started production in March, has a capacity of 500,000 units a year.
